In the Georgia high school athletics world, May 27-31 is called “dead week,” where no athletic practices/play is allowed to be held. So, we thought we would take this time to give you an “end of the school year” summary for our Middle & High School Tigers.

Metter Athletics enjoyed a stellar year riddled with many accomplishments. In all, Metter won 17 Region Championships–8 of those in Middle School, and 9 of those in High school. Middle School Region Champions include: Softball, Baseball, Girls Cross Country, Girls Basketball, Boys Basketball, Boys Soccer, Girls Golf and Boys Golf. Teams named Region Champions at Metter High School are: Baseball, Competition Cheer, Girls Soccer, Girls Track, Boys Track, One Act Play, Literary, Girls Golf and Boys Golf.

The High School Tigers compete in only 20 varsity sports, which includes GHSA-sanctioned One Act Play and Literacy competitions, which means that 45% of the MHS teams won Region Championships this academic year. Middle School does not compete any further than Region Competition, but after fielding 17 competitive teams, MMS had 47% of their teams being Region Champions.

Our High School Tigers were also Region Runner-up in 5 additional sports—Football, Girls Cross Country, Boys Cross Country, Softball and Girls Basketball. Twenty-five percent (25%) of MHS teams were Region Runners-up, which means that 75% of those teams fielded by MHS either won or nearly won Region Championships.

Middle School was Region Runner-up in 3 sports which equates to 18% of those teams being Region Runner-ups. MMS teams named Region Runners-up are: Boys Track, Boys Tennis, and Boys Cross Country.

Metter High School had 11 sports qualify for state playoff competition: Football (first round), Softball (Elite 8), Baseball (second round), Girls Basketball (first round), Girls Soccer (quarterfinals), Boys Soccer (second round), Boys Track (15 athletes), Girls Track (13 athletes), Boys Golf (6 athletes), Girls Golf (6 athletes), and Wrestling (3 athletes qualified for Sectionals).

Among the most notable sports accolades during this past school year was Girls and Boys Soccer at the High School. For the first time in the school’s history, the girls team was not only Region Champions and the boys team the Region Runner-up, but both teams were able to host the first round of the state playoffs on their home field.

“All of our Tigers had great respective seasons and we are proud of our student-athletes and our coaches,” says Athletic Director Vicki Bowen. “From middle school to the high school level, we are getting stronger and stronger in the weight, have put together a very qualified coaching staff, and we have athletes that are dedicated to the mission - WIN AT EVERYTHING. We are excited to see what the next school year brings! Go Tigers!”
